Drone's Eye

Ryan was good to his word and indeed bought Megan's beers that evening—or at least put them on his ever-growing tab. Irish Kevin’s was one of the last places on the island that would actually let him get drinks on credit and Jared Michael Hobgood was playing, so it was a fun, relaxing evening. They talked a little about their failed search and decided that although it was disappointing they were not to be deterred and agreed to commence the search the following morning. After all, Mel Fisher had searched for sixteen years, but Megan did not bring that up.

So it was bright and early when Megan Simmons and Ryan Bodean once again boarded Gidget and flew the now trustworthy old girl out over the wide blue expanse of the Gulf of Mexico.

"Today's the day, Megan, I can just feel it," Ryan said, intoning the great salvor’s famous saying..

"I feel it too. Today's the day we get lucky," replied Megan, and she truly believed it.

"And lucky means rich, doesn't it? I mean, it's all about the joy of discovery of course," Ryan said with a wink. "But who doesn't want to get a little rich at the same time?"

For Megan it was all about the discovery. Well, almost all. She was completely broke after spending the last of her money on fixing up Gidget, although she hadn't let Ryan know just how broke she really was. If they did not get lucky and find the Electra, or any other valuable wreckage for that matter, she would be as good as destitute within weeks. They simply had to find Amelia Earhart's lost plane.

But just like yesterday, after a few hours of flying back and forth across an expanded area of ocean, they still hadn't spotted anything at all resembling an old plane wreck, or a shipwreck, or anything at all bigger than a shoebox.

"Why?" Megan finally shouted as her frustrations got the better of her. “Why can’t we find her?” She slammed her fist on the dash. She immediately regretted it though, and cursed, clutching her slightly sprained wrist.

"Come on now, Megan, she's down there somewhere. Patience and perseverance is what we need. Just gotta have a lit—"

"There. I see something," she blurted, cutting him off mid-sentence. She pointed out the windshield. "Over to the west. There's definitely something down there."

Ryan squinted against the now midday sun and peered down, desperately hoping Megan was right. And then he saw it. Just twenty yards off a submerged reef was what appeared to be a dark, unnatural object on the sea bed. The water was crystal clear in this part of the gulf, but they were too high and too far away to make out the object clearly. Ryan banked sharply to the right and lowered their speed and altitude, then he swung around to the west again and made a slow pass just fifteen feet above the surface.

And now there was no doubt about it. Just below the surface was definitely the wreck of a small airplane.
